Previously concentrating on painting, after completing an MA in Drawing at Norwich University of the Arts in 2012 my focus turned to printmaking which had been a particular area of interest for me when at Hornsey Art School/University of Middlesex.
Mark-making was then, and is now, a process which I find exciting, a magical mystery journey to an unsuspected destination, where my preconceptions are highjacked and taken into an unexpected new way of seeing and expression. Maintaining a dialogue with the emerging imagery and being open to following where it may lead very often ends up in the bin, but on good days it can be a very fruitful way of working. Sometimes I have a clear direction for the finished print, but very often do not.
In this pursuit I have devised alternative methods for the creation of plates employing a variety of materials. Very often I will transfer the effects produced onto lino especially when the original material is fragile and will not survive the production of an edition. Etching lino with caustic soda is another favoured technique, as is playing with ink application and viscosities.
My subject matter is invariably landscape which for me has enormous expressive potential. Originally from London I now live in the Cambridgeshire Fens, a landscape of stark contrasts throughout the year, and where the highly graphic marks made by man and machinery on the earth’s crust are a constant backdrop informing my vision.
